Driving Away the Cold
Did you know that one in six children in the Philadelphia area lives in poverty? Did you know that the federal definition of poverty is a family of four living on an annual income below $24,600? In Pennsylvania, approximately 506,000 children live in poverty, without daily essentials like a warm winter coat. When we learned of this, we knew immediately that we wanted to do something about it.
Our Driving Away the Cold effort began in 2008 with one simple mission: to provide new winter coats to less fortunate children living in the five-county region of Philadelphia. We challenged our dealer members at that time to pledge a new winter coat every time a car was sold in September. The response was remarkable and the program has only gained momentum since. In 2008, we distributed nearly 18,000 new coats. In 2017, we are on track to do approximately 50,000, which would bring our total number of coats given to more than 315,000. This is possible thanks to the support of the 180 participating dealerships that teamed up to be More Than Auto Dealers and do something for the greater good.
Driving Away the Cold distribution events typically take place in October. We rely on our partners at the School District of Philadelphia, Chester Upland School District, area YMCAs and non-profit organizations selected by participating dealerships to help get the new coats to local children who need them most (click here for a list of our partners). Sorry, we cannot give coats directly to individuals or families.
WHY IT’S IMPORTANT
The gift of a new coat warms the body and soul of a child in need. It can supercharge the recipient’s self-esteem and helps him or her to arrive to school warm, ready to learn and to receive two hot meals. It reminds that child that he or she is important.
